David Brotman

about

Our History

Founder and principal craftsman, David Brotman, developed his knowledge and love of wood as a tree doctor in rural Virginia in the 1990’s. While splitting fine hardwood logs into firewood he saw – over and over again – a greater potential in the wood. From that spark, he took up the study of furniture making.

In 2001, David moved to Ontario, Canada, and apprenticed with master woodworkers whose extraordinary eyes for beautiful design continue to influence David’s work. Having trained in both small shops – as right-hand man – and in larger production workshops, David has brought a broad knowledge base to his Los Angeles clientele since opening his studio there in 2005.

David and Form and Function have developed a very strong reputation in the L.A. design community and are noted for their consistently high quality and precision, reliable communication, and smooth coordination with clients and collaborating tradesmen and women.

Our Process

Form and Function customers are always greeted and served directly by its owner. This has been David's preferred approach from the start. It ensures that his clients receive the very product they want and expect.

Initial consultations are always free. They typically involve an on-site visit with a discussion to determine the client's specific needs, aesthetic preferences, and desired services.

Many of the furniture pieces and cabinets have been designed by collaborating architects, interior and/or furniture designers, or by the clients themselves. Quite commonly, Form and Function is sought out to develop a design. In most projects, a natural collaboration unfolds and a beautiful form – with all the desired functions – emerges.

From there, a bid is composed and submitted, and a project budget is established. In the weeks to follow, your project is custom-built – for you.

Testimonials

"I have collaborated with David on several projects now, and am continually impressed by his meticulous workmanship, conscientious attitude, and his ability to think outside the box. He has helped me, as an architect, develop solutions to complicated designs, but always through an artful eye. David's resourcefulness has turned some of my more difficult design problems into fruitful investigations, resulting in unexpected details of beauty and elegance." – Ariel / Voiture 12

“In developing our salon, David was the easiest contractor with whom we worked. He collaborated beautifully. It was as if he could get into our heads and create our desires.  After working with contractors who were late or incapable of ‘hearing’, David was a sheer delight.” – Danny and Aubrey / Studio DNA
